MAGIC-5: an Italian mammographic database of digitised images for research
2008
The implementation of a database of digitised mammograms is discussed. The digitised images were collected beginning in 1999 by a community of physicists in collaboration with radiologists in several Italian hospitals as a first step in developing and implementing a computer-aided detection (CAD) system. All 3,369 mammograms were collected from 967 patients and classified according to lesion type and morphology, breast tissue and pathology type. A dedicated graphical user interface was developed to visualise and process mammograms to support the medical diagnosis directly on a high-resolution screen. The database has been the starting point for developing other medical imaging applications,…
A systematic review of handheld tools in lieu of colposcopy for cervical neoplasia and female genital schistosomiasis
2020
Abstract Background Visualization of the lesions in the lower genital tract is the mainstay for diagnosis of the four lesions found in female genital schistosomiasis (FGS), but colposcopes are generally not available in low‐resource settings. Objective We sought to review handheld devices that could potentially be used for FGS diagnosis. Search strategy We searched Medline and Embase 2015–2019 for handheld devices used in cervical cancer screening and FGS diagnosis. Selection criteria We excluded studies that did not compare the device to standard‐of‐care colposcopes or histopathology. Main results and conclusion In 11 studies, four handheld colposcopes, two smartphones, and one compact dig…
Painful scar neuropathy: principles of diagnosis and treatment
2015
Nerve-tissue interactions are critical. Peripheral nerve injuries may involve intraneural and extraneural scar formation and affect nerve gliding planes, sometimes leading to complex clinical presentations. All of these pathological entities involve pain as the main clinical symptom and can be subsumed under the term "painful scar neuropathy". The authors review the literature on treatment approaches to peripheral nerve scar neuropathy and the outcomes of neurolysis-associated procedures and propose a simple classification and a therapeutic approach to scar neuropathy. The search retrieved twenty-one papers, twenty of which reported pain reduction or resolution with various techniques. Ther…
Tissue classification by texture and spectral analysis of intracoronary ultrasound radio-frequency data
2002
Imaging of vascular structures by intracoronary ultrasound allows in principal the recognition of different lesion types due to the echomorphology in the B-mode image. The subjective visual diagnosis is often difficult, especially the differentiation between thrombi and non-calcified plaque. The aim of this study was the extraction of features from the ultrasound radio-frequency signal for an objective characterization of coronary tissue. Methods of texture analysis and frequency analysis were used to differentiate red and white thrombi in vitro. Eight texture parameters of first and second order significantly differentiated red and white thrombi. The backscatter transfer function of red th…
